The Herstmonceux development comprises 18 new build 1 and 2 bed homes for the Herstmonceux Community Land Trust which is a non-profit organisation set up to provide community benefits in perpetuity.

This development seeks to demonstrate how rural UK residential developments can be highly sustainable, affordable and architecturally outstanding.

The thermal envelope comprises the ground floor and bedroom on the first floor only. This provides a simple orthogonal space highly suited to an offsite construction solution. Prefabrication allows for a low cost, highly insulated, highly airtight timber building. The roof acts as a lightweight umbrella on top. This approach to the roof design offers scope for aesthetics as well as flexibility beneath. Both to accommodate plant and to capture solar gains used to pre-heat air supplying an air source heat pump.

Integration provided the full suite of environmental and building services design duties for this ambitious project.
